Scam Alert!

Posted on April 17, 2023

We were recently contacted about someone receiving a fraudulent email which appeared to be an overdue notice from the Madison County Library billing them for an overdue item. While the email looked official, it was not from Berryville Public Library or the Carroll and Madison Library System. While we send out overdue notices, none of our libraries ask for online payments.
This appears to be a scam that is targeting library patrons across the country, but it is only today that it has affected someone locally, to our knowledge.
The reported fraudulent overdue notice came from the address: [email protected] which appears to be a known scam across the country: The fraudulent email seems to always be about a missing copy of the “Da Vinci Code.” The fraudulent email will typically inform the customer they owe $97.14 for the lost book. There will be a link for a pay portal – do not click on the link! Our emails will never provide an online link for payment. These emails do not seem to be connected in any way to a customer’s account or other confidential information. Emails about overdue and lost items, general bills, holds, as well as reminder messages, will always come from our official domain: [email protected]

Individual missives from the various libraries will come from their respective emails, including:
[email protected]

[email protected] AND [email protected]
